PROJECT OVERVIEW:

By blocking off non-event garbage bins, event waste flows are more controlled. This is a new practice and needs thoughtful consideration. Through that, this project aims to reduce landfill waste at large outdoor events in the Capital Region.

PROJECT INTENT:
- Research, develop, and test how to cover public garbage bins.
- Create some version of maintainable, long-lasting bin covers to be available for “zero-waste” events within the CRD through The Sustainable Fox’s network.

- Use those bin covers during the 2026 Times Colonist 10K race on April 26th.
- Share all data, completed patterns/templates, and photos of development and finished work with the CRD.

Thanks to the CRD Rethink Waste Community Grant, we have a small fleet of prototyped bin covers that are currently in the testing phase.

Who's The Sustainable Fox?

We are a queer led consultation service specializing in intersectional waste reduction and event logistics.

Our mission is to divert materials from landfill while making waste reduction fun and accessible, destigmatize interacting with our waste, and radicalize how waste management is approached as a community.

We might not be onsite at today's event, but we're so happy to support the Bin Cover Project and this simple step toward increasing landfill diversion!

About the Bin Cover creator

Colleen Blunt is a local maker, artist, and waste reduction professional with a technical and administrative background. As a passionate environmentalist, they are especialy excited about this project based on their 7+ years of working with The Sustainable Fox team and their 15+ years of sewing and upcycling-based fabrication experience within the local arts and culture community.
